The Rice Eaters

Digital, 5x8"
Cover art for the book edition of Yide Cai’s play “The Rice Eaters”, published in 2025 by 1319 Press. “Fan Gao, his family and friends are Chinese workers trapped in a factory called Da Feng village; their job is to copy Van Gogh; their employers are from Germany and Hong Kong; their products are sold all over the world; they paint Starry Night in half an hour but get paid very little. They want to escape; they want to paint their own works; they want to be free.”

"i know why iris chang died " follows graphic novelist May and her twin sister April as May grapples with depression and attempts to create her magnum opus - a graphic memoir detailing their family's experience during the Rape of Nanking. A story about grief, remembrance, and art-making in the face of destruction, the piece explores what it means to survive and what it means to live.

I created all the illustrations from the fictional protagonist’s portfolio which were then viewed live in the form of physical props, animated montages, sketch process work, and set projections during the premiere run last month with some example images attached below.

DRAWING DEAD

Digital, 8x12"
Longlisted illustration for the Folio Society’s annual Book Illustration Award, an international illustration contest. Based on the short story “Red Masque of Death” by Edgar Allen Poe, entrants were tasked with illustrating a scene depicting a specific line of text from the story. I chose “And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.” to capture the Red Death at the climax of the story, basking in his victory after murdering the cast of party guests.

MAESTRO

Digital, 8x12"
Editorial portrait assignment of Hans Zimmer, with a focus on displaying the wide variety of electronic instruments he uses to compose masterful soundtracks. I wanted to highlight his materials, as well as capture the often booming, emotional, and low-toned sounds he produces.
